Back in 2014 I was preparing to leave New Zealand where I had been living and working on a two year sabbatical.  In the preceding months I had teamed up with Film enthusiast and cinematographer, Adam Hogg to make a zero budget short film called ‘Mana Moana’ watch here Now living on the Island of Crete in Greece, on the 29th September 2016 I got a phone call from Adam telling me he wanted to come all the way from New Zealand to make another film with me. The prospect of working again with my creative ‘Siamese twin’ was all I needed to inspire me to write the script for ‘Heavenly Time’ in two days. From there on in the entire pre-production, filming and post production schedule evolved from October 1st till January 6th when Adam had to return to NZ. He is however already making plans for his return to continue our Film Adventures!

The hardest graft was, and almost always is the pre-production stage which involves selecting cast, choosing locations, complying with red tape, rehearsing, set dressing, costumes, props and on and on and on.  For a short film this was a surprisingly complex affair with several locations and logistical challenges. The cast, entirely drawn from the local community are all locals ranging from kids to adults who invariably have their ‘real lives’ to get on with in the interim, be it work, school, family or other scheduled activities. This meant our filming schedule had to be extremely tight and precise. Filming in December we also had weather and light contingencies to contend with, therefore actual filming took place over seven days between December 6th -14th with a seven day contingency plan which fortunately wasn’t utilised. Most of the soundtrack is also original and we were fortunate to find four great musicians from Chania to record the tracks (Also completed in record time!) Since Adam didn’t actually arrive in Crete till December 6th I relied heavily on the dedicated support of Assistant Producer Eirini Theophanus who also assisted with Piano Arrangements for the music which I scored for the film. With only a three hour session for the musicians to learn and record the music it was essential to have the richer piano arrangements of the melodies to share with them. Both Adam and I edited the film in between Christmas & New Year celebrations and while the current version is great, we will still conduct editing and sound polishing aiming towards a final edit and trailer by the end of February.
